Weathering steel, that is, atmospheric corrosion-resistant steel, is a low-alloy steel series between ordinary steel and stainless steel. Weathering steel is made of ordinary carbon steel with a small amount of corrosion-resistant elements such as copper and nickel. At the same time, it has the characteristics of rust resistance, corrosion resistance and life extension of components, thinning and consumption reduction, labor saving and energy saving.
Weathering Steel Features:
The protective rust layer is resistant to atmospheric corrosion and is mainly used for steel structures exposed to the atmosphere for a long time, such as railways, vehicles, bridges, towers, photovoltaics, high-speed projects, etc. It is used to manufacture structural parts such as containers, railway vehicles, oil derricks, seaport buildings, oil production platforms and containers containing hydrogen sulfide corrosive medium in chemical petroleum equipment. Compared with ordinary carbon steel, weathering steel has better corrosion resistance in the atmosphere. Compared with stainless steel, weathering steel has only a small amount of alloying elements, such as phosphorus, copper, chromium, nickel, molybdenum, niobium, vanadium, titanium, etc., the total amount of alloying elements is only a few percent, unlike stainless steel, which reaches 100%. Tens of tenths, so the price is relatively low.
Weathering Steel Manufacturing Process
Weathering steel generally adopts the process route of feeding the concentrate into the furnace – smelting (converter, electric furnace – microalloying treatment – argon blowing – LF refining – low superheat continuous casting (feeding rare earth wire) – controlled rolling and controlled cooling. During smelting, The scrap steel is added to the furnace together with the charge, and smelted according to the conventional process. After tapping, the deoxidizer and alloy are added. After the molten steel is treated with argon blowing, it is immediately cast. Rare earth elements are added to the steel, the weathering steel is purified, and the inclusion content is greatly reduced.
Corten Weathering Steel has an attractive appearance
The protective rust that Corten weathering steel develops has a distinctive reddish-brown appearance that is particularly popular among architects and design engineers. It is often used in artistic, outdoor structures and contemporary applications.
